Tuka Rocha – Flamengo – 15º Lugar

Adian Valles – Liverpool – Pole Positon

Frank Perera – AS Roma – 2º Lugar

Tristan Gommendy – FC Porto – 3º Lugar

Mixed Emotions

FREE PRACTICE

Throughout the free practice sessions the track was wet. Straight away Tuka Rocha showed to be on good form for the weekend with some competitive lap times in the tricky conditions.

It was great to see Tuka and the Flamengo car back on the same fine form as in the first race at Donington where we got a beautiful 2nd place in very tricky conditions in Race 2.

QUALIFYING

With no dry running in free practice it was great to see Tuka and the team responding so well to the dry conditions in qualifying. Tuka got P2 in Group B which meant qualification for the quarter finals.

In the quarter final we got past Galatasaray.

In the semi-final the pace again seemed to be quick enough at least in the first sector, to beat Liverpool. Unfortunately, a problem with fuel pick-up prevented Tuka from finishing the lap at a normal speed.
But anyway, Tuka and the team proved proved they were back on great form.

RACE 1

The pace car took the pack round on the formation lap too slowly, resulting in engines overheating and thus loosing power at the race start. Tuka also sufferd a power loss and lost a place in the run up to the first corner. It turned out quickly that the car had very good traction out of the corners but too much understeer going into the corners. Tuka did a super job hanging on to P5 in difficult circumstances. Right at the end we got P4 after Liverpool had some engine problems. Anyway a good result for Flamengo Race Team after the somewhat less successful previous races.

RACE 2

Drama at the first corner. Tuka claims the cars of Corinthians and AC Milan touched each other right in front of him and unfortunately in the first corner braking chaos he was catapulted over the AC Milan car. This of course meant the end of the race.

The car itself sufferd a lot of damage and the team will do it's very best to get the car back in race condition for the last race at Jerez, Spain on 22-23 Nov.

Tristan Gommendy – FC Porto – Vencedor

Franck Perera – AS Roma – 2º Lugar

Yelmer Buurman – PSV Eindhoven – 3º Lugar

In the opening round of the inaugural Superleague Formula championship, last August 31st, at Donington Park, England, Tuka Rocha drove Flamengo’s car with the traditional black and red coloured passion that surrounds the club, and claimed the second place to his team under hard weather conditions and rain, in the second race of the day.

“It was an indescribable emotion to get up on the podium and celebrate it with Flamengo fans. I have never felt anything like that before in my career, what proves the concept of joining football and motor racing is very exciting and that the championship has everything to be great”, said the 25 year old driver (13/12/1982), that began his career at kart racing aged 8.

Tuka declared himself “each day more in love with Flamengo” and promised he is going to push very hard to take the team to the title battle in the next five rounds of the championship. “I worked very hard to be here, in one of the top world racing series, driving a 750 horsepower, V12-powered car and having the background of the most passionate supporters of the world”

Flamengo’s President, Marcio Braga, who was at Donington Park, said he was surprised. “I have to confess that I’m not a specialist in motor racing series, but watching Tuka driving under the rain and taking Flamengo’s car to the podium was very exciting. We are delighted to be one of the 17 clubs taking part of the Superleague Formula and we are really into the championship. We are going to send someone from our club to every race; we want to follow it closely”

The Superleague Formula director responsible for the Brazilian market, Gustavo Erich Wolf, reminded that soon will be issued an interactive program through the www.superleagueformula.com or www.flamengo.com.br website, where fans will be able to link and become sponsors: for around 10 euros, the supporter will have his name written in Flamengo’s car, will receive a certificate of official sponsor and will be able to win travels and tickets to cheer in the last racings of the season.

Since we announced the club’s participation in ‘the beautiful race’ yesterday, we have been completely overwhelmed by the huge amount of interest and support you’ve offered us.

In fact, over the last 24 hours, we’ve had tens of thousands of passionate Flamengo fans stopping by to say hello… so thanks to everybody and welcome one and all!

You’ve left loads of comments (in both the Flamengo section here, and the ‘why are we doing it?’ section here), as well as on blogs such as Velocidade, Cordeiro Mau, Wonk-A-BuzZ and Voz do Seven.

Also, Flamengo’s Agência FLA blog also reported the fantastic news and it was good to hear that club President, Márcio Braga, is backing the Rubro-Negro to be a huge success in ‘the beautiful race’: “We are very proud to be part of this wonderful venture and to have the opportunity of taking our brand and our excellence in various sports to a new competitive category – motorsports - where we will surely follow our tradition to fight for the title.”

To answer some of your questions, I shall be posting an ‘everything you need to know about Superleague Formula’ entry tomorrow but for now, to answer Bruno’s comment, I thought it best to explain that - although the championship will only be staged in Europe during our debut year - Latin America is a big part of our plans.

In fact, we’re hoping to race there in Year 2 but for now, we hope that all of you will be very keen to see their car in action on TV, where we are working with a number of companies to support / promote the Championship so that as many people as possible will be able to watch SF.

OK, that’s enough for now but, once again, a huge and really warm welcome to all Flamengo fans! As always, keep checking in here to find out what’s new, to see who else is lining up to take part and, most importantly, to leave your comments and to let us know what you think about Superleague Formula.
More to come from Brazil???

Meanwhile, the team in Barcelona continue to prepare for the big move to SF HQ over the next few weeks, with new personnel lining up to help push the beautiful race forward. In particular, we have a clutch of new clubs (in Europe, Asia and South America) lining up to take part, and they will be working hard behind-the-scenes to prepare for these announcements.

From the motor racing perspective, the list of participating race teams is very much in the pipeline (their identities will be revealed in the not-too-distant future, so watch this space!), and Robin is also busy looking at the tracks that will host Superleague Formula in Year One, as well! He is now in the process of preparing a definitive list for submission to the FIA next month and, once agreed, this will be published by the end of the year.

Brazil goes crazy for SF

Alex and Robin met yesterday with another football team who look like they are very keen to join Superleague Formula, and they also took the opportunity to meet with one of the big broadcasters over there who is interested in snapping up the rights to the Championship for Brazil.

At the moment they are in Rio with Flamengo and are, amongst other things, discussing the launch of Mengo’s car to the fans which we are all really excited about. That said, we now need to see how to get the car to Brazil for their last match of the season, which takes place on 25 November!

Back in Europe, we’re also in contact with Anderelcht and Olympiacos to get the wheels in motion for their launches - the latter probably taking place around the beginning of October. As you can imagine, everyone in Greece is very enthusiastic about the beautiful race and also very passionate about their club, so that’ll be one to watch!

The main reason for going was to meet up with the Flamengo team to talk about how we do the launch to fans in Rio in November, and they conducted a site visit around the stadium to identify areas where we could do the unveiling with the football team.

One of them was the trophy room, below, which would involve us getting the car up three flights of very steep stairs. However, in Superleague Formula all is possible (or so they keep telling me)!!!

While they were there, Alex and Robin also met with another football club who is currently looking to join the Championship as well. As you can imagine, it would be great to have two Brazilian clubs in ‘the beautiful race’, as it would create huge rivalry and a big following within the country.

They also had a meeting with one of the big broadcasters who is very interested in acquiring the TV rights for Superleague Formula. It is a big station that would be very committed to programming and promoting the Championship over there which is vital for us, as we want to make sure all the Brazilian fans get to watch the races back home.

The plan is for a special presentation on Saturday, where Flamengo’s captain, Fabio Luciano, alongside other players (including Ibson and Obina) will present the Rubro Negro’s Superleague Formula car to the Brazilian media in the club’s trophy room, who will get the opportunity to interview the players and club / SF representatives.

Then, on Sunday, we will be taking the car to the Maracana stadium to meet all the passionate Mengo fans at their final game of the season (v Atletico Paranese)… and we absolutely cannot wait.

Will we see you there?

Today’s the day that the passionate Mengo supporters get their first glimpse of their club’s V-12 powered, 750 horsepower single-seater racing car that will represent the rubro-negro in ‘the beautiful race’.

Renowned for its football and motor sport prowess, it was vital that a Brazilian club should be in the Superleague Formula championship… and with an estimated 33 million supporters, Flamengo was the obvious choice.

Today: Flamengo are set to hold a press conference this morning to reveal the car to the media, with star players helping to unveil their club’s Superleague Formula car inside the club’s official trophy room.

Tomorrow, it will be the Mengo fans’ turn when they get to see the car at the final home game of the 2007 Brazilian Serie A Championship (v Atletico Paranese).

With up to 95,000 at the at Estádio do Maracanã, it will definitely be the largest ever crowd to see a Superleague Formula launch, and Alex (Superleague Formula’s President and CEO) can’t wait!

“Estádio do Maracanã is a wonderful historic venue and we’re delighted to present the Superleague Formula car to the Flamengo fans in such a brilliant and significant setting,” he says. “We have no doubt this club is going to be one of the most fiercely supported in Superleague Formula.

“While plans for our debut season centre on six races in Europe – I am sure we are going to come under extreme pressure to bring the championship to Brazil in future years.”

We’ll have more on who was there and what was said later on…

The media started to arrive at around 09.30, followed by the sponsors and finally, Flamengo’s President himself, Marcio Braga (below, in car!).

The unveiling of the car took place up in the Trophy Room, where we were not only joined by Flamengo’s finest footballers but also a number of top athletes from other sports, including World Champion rowing star Kissya Cataldo with her male rowing team-mates and Flamengo gymnast, Diego Hipolito.

There was much excitement as the coach and President, Marcio Braga unveiled the car and, of course, it was impossible to keep some fans away, as they were desperate to capture the car on camera (speaking of which, click here to see all the images of our visit to Rio, so far)!

Overall, we’ve had an absolutely fantastic response, and we haven’t even got to the main event tomorrow. It’s going to be huge!

This was the first time a racing car had ever been allowed inside the stadium (not even Ayrton Senna achieved that!), and we were totally blown away by the fans’ passion and positive response to their entry into ‘the beautiful race’.

Having started early to get the car inside the stadium (before everyone started to arrive!), we had time to meet the fans, hand out some SF Flamengo leaflets and, of course, to experience the pre-match build up (v Atletico Paranese) outside the stadium… which was pretty crazy!

Once inside the stadium, helium balloons (secured by a net) were placed over the car, ready for the great unveiling…

Then, 30 minutes before the game got under way, hundreds of red and black balloons were released into the sky to the roar of the huge 82,000-strong crowd…

Alex (Andreu - SF’s president), along with Marcio Braga, Flamengo’s President, had their photos taken with the car on the pitch, accompanied by a quartet of beautiful Mengo hostesses.

It goes without saying that the Flamengo fans loved their car. It was just an incredible atmosphere inside and outside the stadium… and they won 2-0!

So thanks to everyone for making us feel so welcome in Rio… and most of all, thanks to the Rubro-Negro’s!!!
