Borussia wins, Beijing finishes the championship with a third place
23/11/2008
Surprisingly James Walker (BVB Borussia Dortmund) won the last race of the first Superleague Formula championship in Jerez de la Frontera, in front of a record crowd of 34,000 fans
The English driver, at his second appearance in the championship after racing at Nurburgring, took his best result of the year for the German team.
“Yesterday the problems to the car forced me to skip both the free practices and the qualifyings and so, having never raced on this track, I expected two difficult races,” the winner explained at the end of the race. “So you'll understand how this win was a surprise even bigger than the fourth place at Nurburgring.”
Walker then dedicated his win to a friend who was tragically killed yesterday during a plane crash.
Behind him Antonio Pizzonia (SC Corinthians), at his best result of the season: “In Brazil we have millions of Corinthians fans and this year they began to follow my races with a lot of attention. When I come back, they always wait or me at the airport to cheer me. During the season, often luck wasn't on my side, but I'm happy for finishing the season with a nice podium and I hope, if I'll be here again in 2009, things could go even better.”
The new champion Davide Rigon (Beijing Gu'Aon), already certain of his title after race-1, had another strong race finishing third with the fastest lap.
“I was much more relaxed during this race, just thinking to push without making any damage,” he confessed. “Unfortunately already at the first turn I locked a tyre and so for the whole first part of the race the balance of the car wasn't perfect. After the pit-stop, the car was ok, but Antonio (Pizzonia) managed to overtake Flamengo before me and so I had to stay behind him.”
During the race, there was a big accident between Stamatis Katsimis (Olimpiacos CFP) and Max Wissel (FC Basel), whose car flied before ending on the barriers. He was recovered at the hospital but just had a bruised shoulder and nothing broken.
